Shire License 1.0 (“Shire 1.0”, identifier Shire-1.0) is the licence LogicByte Studios (“we”, “us”) releases Mineshire under, and the one we put on plugins, mods and other extensions we publish for it.

It’s short on purpose. You can use Mineshire freely and build on top of it, but the software itself stays ours: you can’t copy it, sell it or open it up. If a release or an extension says it’s licensed under Shire 1.0, this text is the licence.

1. Definitions

In this licence:

  • “Software” means Mineshire, the desktop application and every update we release for it, together with the extensions we publish under this licence.
  • “Extension” means a plugin, mod, theme, integration or other add-on that adds to or talks to the Software.
  • “You” means the person, club or company using the Software or building an Extension.
  • “Your servers” means the Minecraft servers you create, import or run with the Software.

2. What we give you

We give you a worldwide, free, non-exclusive licence to install and use the Software. It’s personal to you, you can’t pass it on, and it lasts until it ends under Termination.

You’re getting a licence, not buying the Software. Whatever this text doesn’t hand to you stays with us.

3. What you can do

  • Install the Software on any computer you own or control, and use it to create, manage and run Minecraft servers.
  • Run those servers for yourself, your friends and your community, including a community that chips in toward the costs.
  • Keep one spare copy of the installer as a backup.
  • Write Extensions for the Software, and publish them, under the rules in the Extensions section.
  • Use the interfaces we document for Extensions to connect to the Software.

4. What you can’t do

Don’t do any of the following, and don’t help anyone else do them:

  • copy, sell, rent, lease, sublicense or hand out the Software, or build it into a product of your own;
  • offer the Software, or a service built on running it, to other people as a hosted or managed product;
  • take the Software apart to get at its code (reverse engineering, decompiling or disassembling it), unless the law gives you that right regardless;
  • modify the Software, create works based on it, or remove or change a notice of ownership;
  • bypass the signature check that protects updates, or install an update we didn’t publish;
  • use the names Mineshire or LogicByte Studios, or our logos, in a way that suggests we made or approved something we didn’t.

If you want to do one of these, ask first. Write to us and we’ll tell you whether we can agree.

5. Extensions

If you write an Extension, it’s yours. You choose its licence, and that can be an open one, a paid one or a private one. Shire 1.0 doesn’t reach into your own code.

Two things stay true whatever licence you pick. Your Extension can’t contain or copy any part of the Software, and its licence can’t give anyone rights over the Software itself. Using the Software still takes this licence, or the EULA.

Extensions that we publish under Shire 1.0 are part of the Software, and everything above applies to them.

Where Mineshire lists, installs or updates Extensions, we may refuse or remove one that is malicious, misleading, breaks the law, or pretends to be made by us or by someone else.

6. Components made by others

The Software includes components made by others, and it can install server software and add-ons made by others, such as Minecraft, Paper, Fabric, plugins and mods. Each belongs to its author and comes with the author’s own licence, which stays in force. We haven’t checked them, so we can’t vouch for any of it.

A list of the components in the Software and their notices is available on request at legal@mineshire.com.

7. Ownership and trademarks

The Software, including its design, code, text and artwork, belongs to us or our licensors and is protected by copyright and other laws. Mineshire and LogicByte Studios and our logos are ours. “Minecraft” is a trademark of Mojang, and Mineshire is independent of Mojang and Microsoft.

Got an idea or a suggestion for us? Send it, and we may use it however we like, with no payment and no credit owed.

8. No warranty

As far as the law allows, the Software comes “as is” and “as available”, with no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of fitness for a particular purpose or of non-infringement. Mineshire is still in alpha. Things change, things break, and a bug can wreck a world, so back up what you care about.

Your consumer rights under the law where you live stay as they are, wherever a contract can’t take them away.

9. Limit of liability

We stay responsible for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud and fraudulent misrepresentation, and for anything else the law doesn’t let us limit.

Beyond that, and as far as the law allows, we aren’t liable for lost data, lost worlds, lost profit or business, or for indirect or consequential loss that comes from using the Software. Our total liability for everything connected with the Software is capped at what you paid for it, which is nothing while it’s free.

10. Termination

You can end this licence whenever you like by uninstalling the Software and deleting your copies. We can end it if you break it, for example by doing something under What you can’t do, or if the law requires us to.

When it ends, you stop using the Software. Your servers, worlds and files stay on your computer, and we have no access to them. Ownership, the warranty, the limit of liability and the governing law carry on.

11. Versions of this licence

Each version of the licence has its own number. A release stays under the version it shipped with, and a later release may use a newer one. The text of a published version doesn’t change after the fact, apart from fixing a typo; a real change gets a new number, such as Shire 1.1.

12. Where this fits with our other documents

The End User License Agreement is the contract for the installed desktop app, and it carries the details this licence leaves out. The two are meant to agree. Where the two disagree about the app, the End User License Agreement wins. The website and the online features fall under the Terms of Use, and your personal data under the Privacy Policy.

13. Governing law and courts

The law of England and Wales applies to this licence and to every dispute or claim that comes out of it. Only the courts of England and Wales may hear them. If you’re a consumer, you can also go to the courts of the country where you live, and that country’s mandatory consumer protections still apply to you.

14. General

If a court finds one part of this licence unenforceable, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a right the moment it arises doesn’t mean we’ve given it up. Your rights can’t be transferred; ours can, as part of a business transfer. The licence is in English, and a translation is only there to help you read it.
